Types of Injuries from Car Accidents

Our East Baton Rouge Parish car accident lawyers are familiar with the varied types of injuries sustained in motor vehicle collisions. Because of the various forces and shocks victims may experience, injuries sustained in car accidents can range from very mild to very severe, depending entirely on the force and angle of the specific impact. If pedestrians are involved in auto accidents, the trauma can be that much worse.

Sprains and strains

Sharp pain in the area of the shoulder, head, or neck is commonly referred to as whiplash and is caused by the jerking experienced in an accident. It can lead to damaged soft neck and back tissue. While accident victims may attempt to treat such an injury on their own with over-the-counter painkillers, a doctor's treatment may be necessary.

Vertebrae damage

Pain that does not improve with physical therapy or other basic types of medical care may actually be the result of damaged vertebrae. A bulging disc, for instance, extends into the nerve canal, resulting in numbness or radiating pain and tingling in the limbs and extremities.

In some instances, spinal surgery is necessary to treat this type of injury. The following are the three most common spinal surgeries:

  • Discectomy, where a damaged disc is removed
  • Laminectomy, where a portion of bone is removed to relieve pressure from a nerve
  • Fusion, where plates, rods or screws or inserted to stabilize the spine

Concussions

Symptoms of a concussion or trauma to the brain can include the following:

  • Unconsciousness
  • Loss of memory
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches

There may be no other outward symptoms.

Knee and shoulder injuries

Ligaments are tissues that stabilize your knee and shoulder, joints and are easily strained torn in accidents.

Broken bones

Almost any bone can be fractured in an automobile accident, based on the severity and angle of vehicular impact.
